19th Hispanic & Lusophone Studies Symposium: Dimensions of Violence in Luso-Hispanic contexts

On April 15-16th, the graduate student symposium explored the distinct literary and cultural manifestations of violence in Luso-Hispanic contexts such as Latina/o, Latin American, and Iberian studies across a wide range of historical periods and academic disciplines. Possible themes included but were not limited to: torture, state violence, terrorism, violence in relation to gender, racial macro and micro-aggressions, economic, social and cultural oppression, trauma and memory, etc.

Christian Supiot was an active member of the Symposium Committee. Among his duties were securing donations from organizations and funds, renting and managing spaces, preparing and controlling a budget over 6000$, contacting with keynote speakers, and managing the calendar for over 30 presentations from scholars across the country.
Christian was also directly responsible for designing and producing the symposium poster and the promotional videos.

Our keynote speaker was Dr. Brian Gollnick, from University of Iowa. Most of his work and long-term experience abroad has been in Mexico, a part of the world he deeply loves, but his current research relates to political culture in the United States and its engagement with Latin America around the issue of torture. Check him up! and go our website for more videos of our round table participants! https://sppo.osu.edu/annual-symposium
